I’m a pornographer as well as a smut merchant

So I know I said I wouldn’t actually blog that much, but I keep thinking of things I want to say.  I suppose that’s how it works.

I do the covers myself.  I basically blew my first two month’s royalties buying up dirty photos. And yes, I haven’t been doing this for two months yet.  Um.

The covers are a bit tricky because you need photos you have rights to, and model releases and, um, other stuff, I guess.  So basically I can’t just take a camera somewhere with lots of hot guys and try and get them to stand near random women in kind of posy dance-move sorts of ways.  Well, I could do that, but it would be purely recreational but I’d need to get them all to sign shit, and I don’t know what said shit would be, and that starts getting complicated.

So I did it this way.

I’m making them all blurry and arty because I figure the same rules as go for me go for the models.  They might not want their mothers seeing them either.  Cause this is smut. So the smuttier it is, the less likely it is you can see a face.  That’s why the guy is showing on One Plus Two, cause that’s a romance.

I’m also cropping them down and reusing parts and things to make them go further.  Because I’m cheap.  And it’s fun, all the scratching and pixeling and all the rest.

So now I have a big pile of dirty photos on my computer, like several years worth even at the current writing speed.

Which means that now I’m a pornographer as well as a smut merchant!

You wondered when that was going to come into it, didn’t you?

Sort of a pornographer.  I mean, when you think about it, I’m giving you dirty photos for money, bundled with the dirty words for money.

My mother would be so proud.  Except for, you know...

Anyways.  As well as photos for the covers, you also need fonts that no-one has rights too.  I’d never heard of this until I started, but there you go.  Fonts are copyrighted too, and since I’m not really in a position to disrespect copyright any more everyone should always respect copyright I need to do this properly.

So, public service announcement.  Any other authors out there, or anyone else who cares – because maybe the same rules go for websites – fonts are here, photos are here and you need to pay but it seems like the cheapest place for just a few, not hundreds at a time.  There’s a free trial for the photos. There’s also an adult filter on the search there that you really need to turn off to find anything like what I’m using.

And yeah, I didn’t realise that for a while.

The easiest free photo editior I found is paint.net, which is kind of a shit to get started with but there’s tutorials and things.  You need to work out what layers are, and you can’t change text boxes again once you finish typing, but other than that it’s usable.  By me.  Which says something.

So, I’ll stop now.  I’m supposed to be editing something, and we all know how that ends.

Something being another novella that’s probably lit rather than smut.  Which makes it slower going.  And more likely I’m be here.
