How Words Work

This is another half-formed thought.

Once upon a time someone said, “We hold these truths to be self-evident.”

Except those truths obviously weren’t self-evident, actually, since someone needed to say them.  They weren’t truths at all, not then.  They were ideas being put out into the world.  But someone said it, and other people agreed, and the saying over and over made it true two hundred years later.

It’s kind of a cool thought.

Like magic incantations.

Saying something is true firmly enough makes people forget it isn’t.  So you can just act like it is.

But then again, I suppose that’s how all the evil gets started too.  So maybe it needs some watching.

Anyways, kind of a footnotey thing to the PS3 one from the other week.  Epically great lines from other people stolen and mis-used there, in case you noticed and wondered.

“In this fucking ugly world, that kind of love does not exist.”  That one line kept me going through another five seasons of the L Word.

“If you can keep your head when all about you are losing theirs and blaming it on you,” is Kipling.

Just in case anyone had spotted them and was getting fucked off trying to work out what they seemed familiar.
